Editorial of September 2010 - The deceitfulness of sin !

“Take care lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God….that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3.12-13)
One of the fascinating things to take note of in the way the Bible deals with “sin”, is how it so often personalises it. In other words, “sin” is seen in Scripture not merely as something, but as someone who thinks, acts, enslaves and kills. Perhaps the best explanation for this is that for the Bible, in every sin, and behind every sin, is the personal activity and figure of Satan. It may not be in tune with modern secularised society to say so, but it is impossible to eliminate the devil from reality and at the same time take seriously the Old and New Testaments.

It’s like talking about “An A to Z Guide” to defeating sin, when the reality is that the thing in question – “besetting sin” – is massively difficult to deal with, and will never be finally killed off till either we die, or Christ returns. |
